The movie was TERRIFIC It had everything Drugs, Parties, Famous Dealers, Smuggling scams The list goes on and on.It was a nonstop action packed movie I hoped the book would elaborate on the movie parts Sadly it was a Lil slow, don t get me wrong the mans life is UNBELIEVABLE But I kinda expected spoiled from the movie I guess It was a good read none the less The way the man lived his life PURE INSANITY From the people he met and dealt with, to the woman he married, The movie was TERRIFIC It had everything Drugs, Parties, Famous Dealers, Smuggling scams The list goes on and on.It was a nonstop action packed movie I hoped the book would elaborate on the movie parts Sadly it was a Lil slow, don t get me wrong the mans life is UNBELIEVABLE But I kinda expected spoiled from the movie I guess It was a good read none the less The way the man lived his life PURE INSANITY From the people he met and dealt with, to the woman he married, to the shenanigans that took place in between GOLD very aptly named, because this book blows Good read This is good read, the rise fall of someone with a ton of potential but dedicated to selfish pursuits. Four stars and not five because this book gives way too much space to detailing the quirks of Jung s personal life Who cares But the book earned every one of those four stars for the in depth analysis of how a mid level pot bust led to a prison sentence that aligned two men who were to become the leading forces of smuggling cocaine into the U.S throughout the 1980s And the final chapters present compelling interviews with the undercover agents who took down Jung in a series of stings took a Four stars and not five because this book gives way too much space to detailing the quirks of Jung s awhile to get him locked away for life If you ve seen the movie, it s that but waydetailed and way less glamorization of the life If you like the movie, read the book You will enjoy it After reading US George Jung started off as a rebel in Weymouth High School By his early twenties, he had begun smuggling marijuana and envisioning grandiose schemes he was certain would make him rich Like so many career criminals, a stint at Danbury s prison connected him to other felons, who would eventually become his business partners on the outside George became, arguably, the most trusted gringo in the cocaine game, earning an estimated 100 million by the time he was pulled off the streets The tales of wealth are beyond belief, as is George s personal cocaine consumption George became so speedy on the drug that, one time, he refused to stop his vehicle for a friend to get out he was in such a rush to nowhere that he would only slow down in the rotary enough for his friend to make a leap and roll It took two circles around the rotary Unlike the smugglers and cartel members of Colombia, George is a magnanimous man He is largely nonviolent and generally charismatic He is addicted to women, cocaine, money And it s glamorous, even in jail because he frequently pulls a Houdini act.Blow is a wild story, but could move alongquickly There is a lot of history prior to the meat and potatoes that I found less interesting.Favorite quotes One man s freedom fighter was always another man s dictator 114 I go into Neiman Marcus in Miami and tell them I wanted that and I wanted that and that, and I take my clothes off and say, Here, throw these away, and put on the new stuff and tell them to deliver all the rest and walk out On one occasion he had a tailor in Fort Lauderdale line his blue jeans in silk because they felt so good that way And he ordered a half dozen pairs of cashmere pants Cashmere pants, sir The guy said he never heard of anyone wearing cashmere pants, but when I started peeling off the hundreds, he started seeing what a good idea it was after all 218 This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers To view it, click here This is a really fascinating story, and proves the old cliche that the truth is often stranger and I would add, interesting than fiction I picked this up on a whim having had it on my shelf for years I got it for free after a reissue, I guess I d already seen the movie, but it s definitelyinvolved and better than the movie Still makes me want to see the movie again just for comparison. It s flabbergasting what drug affected countless lives, many probably in negative ways, his character is still sympathetic and likeable Most amazing was his inability to get out of the business, no matter how it endangered him That lure of money and drugs was too much, and in Porter s account, Jung keeps going as the reader increasingly urges him to get out before it s too late I read a lot of true crime just for it being in that genre This one, specifically, I thought to read while doing a re watch of the Depp movie Of course, goes on in the book andthan could have been in the movie The extremity of Jung s drug use and the kinkiness of sex life could have beenunderscored, both for drama and humor Interestingly, Barile of the Tonsorial Parlor does not come across as colorful as the Reubens portrayal so I wonder how much there was to that, maybe jus I read a lot of true crime just for it being in that genre This one, specifically, I thought to read while doing a re watch of the Depp movie Of course, goes on in the Parlor does not come across as colorful as the Reubens portrayal so I wonder how much there was to that, maybe just script and or improv Reubens did need to show what he could do as an actor at that time This is fast paced and a good read, really amazing to what heights Jung went to as the American rep for the Medell n Cartel generally and Pablo Escobar specifically.Something this book does not answer, and maybe cannot be answered, is why while accumulating millions of dollars and years of incarceration did not Jung stop on his own, sooner The excess and success of Carlos Lehder is as intertwined with the rise and downfall of Jung here as in the movie and it would seem a movie or book length treatment of that mad criminal s own arc is worth doing
